Gere Wooden Polychrome Mask

Wobe People, Republic of the Ivory Coast. This attractive mask has a beard of various brass and metal bells accenting the large mouth with exposed teeth and the prominent nose. The coffee bean shaped eyes and sloped protruding forehead are accented by an incised crved pattern on the medial ridge. Encrustation from offerings remanents of kaolin accents on the mouth and eyes. About one third of the rim is lost. Size approximately 16".
